Interpretation and Explanation of Buddhism Through Scientific Framework: Case Studies

บทคัดย่อ
งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ (ก) เพื่อทราบรูปแบบการตีความและอธิบายพระพุทธศาสนาโดยใช้กรอบวิทยาศาสตร์ (ข) เพื่อประเมินการตีความและอธิบายพระพุทธศาสนาโดยใช้กรอบวิทยาศาสตร์และ (ค) เพื่อเสนอแนวทางที่ควรจะเป็นในการตีความและอธิบายพระพุทธศาสนาโดยใช้กรอบวิทยาศาสตร์โดยกําหนดขอบเขตการศึกษาให้ครอบคลุมกรณีศึกษาในประเทศไทย กรอบวิทยาศาสตร์ที่กล่าวนี้มุ่งหมายถึงที่พัฒนาโดยอาศัยความรู้จากทางวิทยาศาสตร์ธรรมชาติเป็นสําคัญ กรณีศึกษาดังกล่าวประกอบด้วยผลงานเรื่อง (ก) เหตุเกิด พ.ศ. 1 เล่ม 1 และ เล่ม 2 ของพระเมตตานันโท ภิกขุ (ข) มหาเวทย์มวยไทย ของอัตถนิช โภคทรัพย์และ (ค) แนะวิธีปฏิบัติอิริยาบถ 4 ของพระครูภาวนานุศาสก์ (ธัมมธโร ภิกขุ) กรณีศึกษาเหล่านี้มีจุดเน้นที่วิธีการศึกษาเนื้อหาในคัมภีร์พุทธศาสนา แก่นเนื้อหาของพระพุทธศาสนา และประสบการณ์ทางศาสนาจากการปฏิบัติกรรมฐานตามแนวทางของพระพุทธศาสนาตามลําดับ ผลการศึกษาพบว่า (ก) ในกรณีของพระเมตตานันโท ภิกขุและอัตถนิช โภคทรัพย์รูปแบบการตีความและอธิบายที่ใช้คือ “รูปแบบการตีความและอธิบายแบบปฏิกิริยา” ขณะที่ในกรณีของพระครูภาวนานุศาสก์ (ธมฺมธโร ภิกขุ) จัดเป็น “รูปแบบการตีความและอธิบายแห่งความเป็นรูปธรรม” (ข) ผลการประเมินพบว่ามีการใช้ทุตรรกบทและความคลาดเคลื่อนในความเข้าใจทางวิทยาศาสตร์ในการพัฒนากรอบการตีความและอธิบาย และ (ค) แนวทางที่ควรจะเป็นในการตีความและอธิบายพระพุทธศาสนาโดยใช้กรอบวิทยาศาสตร์นั้น พบว่าควรดําเนินไปภายในกรอบความสัมพันธ์แบบเสริมซึ่งกันและกัน
Abstract
Objectives of this study are (a) to study hermeneutics in which Buddhism is interpreted and
explained through scientific frameworks, (b) to evaluate such hermeneutics, and (c) to recommend guidelines for interpreting and explaining Buddhism with science. The scope of this
study covers case studies in Thailand. The scientific frameworks in question refer to those developed on the basis of knowledge drawn from natural science. The case studies include (a)
It Happens in B.E. One, Vol. I and Vol. II by Venerable Mettanandho Bhikkhu, (b) Mythology of
Classic Muay Thai by Atthanich Bhogasap, and (c) Introduction to the Practice of Four Postures by Venerable Phrakhoo Bhavananusas (Dhammadharo Bhikkhu). These case studies consecutively focus on the approach to study contents of Buddhist texts, the core of Buddhism,
and religious experience from the practice of Buddhist meditation. Findings show that (a) a
reactionary hermeneutics is employed by Venerable Mettanandho Bhikkhu and Atthanich Bhogasap while a hermeneutics of corporality is applied by Venerable Phrakhoo Bhavananusas
(Dhammadharo Bhikkhu); (b) fallacies and inaccurate understanding of science are involved in
the development of the hermeneutics; and (c) it is recommended that interpretation and explanation of Buddhism through scientific frameworks should be carried out within the framework of complementarity between Buddhism and science.
